In the United States, the Greta Gerwig-directed movie brought in 4.1 million distinct viewers on Max in its debut week on HBO’s streaming service. That number greatly outpaced that of the next-closest movie, Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, which, in its first seven days on Netflix, attracted 2.8 million unique views.
Given that Netflix has more than twice as many active users on its platform as Max does, the accomplishment is even more remarkable.
Barbie is 2023’s Highest Grossing Picture
Barbie’s success on streaming services further enhances the film’s enduring popularity with viewers after a record-breaking theatrical run.
Barbie made nearly $1.44 billion at the international box office after its July release, making it the highest-grossing movie of 2023 and the highest-earning title in Warner Bros. history. The movie had an initial budget of up to $145 million.
It remains to be seen if Barbie’s indisputable appeal will transfer into award wins on the biggest platform. Barbie is up for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
However, the picture will have fierce opposition from Oppenheimer, the “Barbenheimer” film, which has been sweeping the Oscar circuit since 2024.
Barbie’s hopes of winning an Oscar were damaged by high-profile fights at the British Academy Film Awards and the Golden Globes, which strongly favored Oppenheimer.
Additionally, Barbie is proud to announce that Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera, respectively, have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress.
But a lot of the conversation leading up to the Oscars concerned the big prizes for which Barbie was not nominated, specifically Best Actress for actress and producer Margot Robbie and Best Director for Gerwig.
Among those who criticized the alleged snubs were Stephen King, Gosling, Ferrera, and an unidentified Academy member. Despite their regret, Robbie and Gerwig chose not to dwell on their mistakes and instead celebrate Barbie’s achievements.
