Everest Masala and MDH spices: After a lab test of Masala from Everest & MDH, a high level of cancer-causing chemicals was found. The Indian govt is now taking action against these harmful masala/ spice companies. Govt is making inspections at these companies Everest and MDH Spice. Govt is recommending them continuously to apply correct measures. These masala companies are banned in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Nepal.

India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) is Taking Actions
Indian food department, FSSAI has also started inspecting the products of MDH Spice and Everest. They also requested lab data from Hong Kong and Nepal.
A senior official said; “We have also conducted three consultations with the industry,”
The Spices Board of India, the nodal agency for spice exports, recently mandated ethylene oxide testing for all spices exported to Hong Kong and Singapore. In 2022 the government had mandated ethylene oxide testing for spices exported to Europe.

Nepal has banned Everest & MDH
According to Nepal’s Department of Food Technology and Quality Control, harmful cancer-causing agents are detected in lab tests of Masala from Everest and MDH Spice.
A spokerperson from Nepals Food COntrol Department has confirmed tha ban of Everest & MDH Masala in Nepal.
In April 2024, Hong Kong had banned Spice from MDH and Everest.
Few days later, Singapore’s Food Agency banned Masala from MGH and Everest due to high levels of Ethylene Oxide.
Why Ethylene Oxide is Harmful?
Ethylene Oxide is a ‘group 1’ carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer which can cause cancer in humans. Kanika Malhotra is a clinical dietician and certified diabetes educator; she said:
“Ethylene oxide exposure is linked to various cancers, including lymphoma, leukaemia, stomach, and breast cancer, raising serious health risks.”
Everest & MDH are discussed Internationally
Everest and MDH are the local Indian names but are exported to many other countries for many years. Countries like Australia, New Zealand, and the United States are now discussing the excess of ethylene oxide in these spice products. Jenny Bishop, an official with New Zealand’s food safety regulator, highlighted to Reuters the potential dangers of ethylene oxide and confirmed they are investigating the issue.
Spice exports are thriving
Despite the recent controversies, Indian spice exports are thriving. In FY24, spice exports from India increased to $4.25 billion from $3.76 billion the previous year. This underscores India’s significant role in the global spice market, which has seen increasing demand for high-quality, safe products.
