Psittacosis symptoms and treatment of parrot fever: Psittacosis frequently manifests following interaction with parrots, parakeets, or mynah birds, according to Cleveland Clinic Akron General emergency medicine specialist Patrick McHugh, who specializes in wilderness medicine.
Anyone experiencing symptoms of the virus, such as chills and fever, headache, muscle pains, and nonproductive cough, should see a doctor and report any recent interaction with wildlife to them.
According to a WHO statement, psittacosis is a minor sickness with symptoms that appear five to fourteen days after exposure to the bacterium that causes it. Less than 1 in 100 occurrences result in death, therefore it is rarely fatal.
“Antibiotics, such as doxycycline, are effective,” McHugh claims. “Prompt antibiotic treatment is effective and allows avoiding complications such as pneumonia,” says Dembek. There isn’t a vaccination to stop the sickness.
For those who have particular medical issues, the sickness is more deadly. “As with many diseases, the immunocompromised and elderly are at greatest risk of serious illness should they contract psittacosis,” explains Dembek. Because the illness can pass through the placenta, pregnant individuals are also more vulnerable, according to McHugh.
Although there is no need for alarm over reports of an increase in instances in some nations, experts do advise avoiding contact with birds whenever possible and visiting a physician if you get flu-like symptoms. “It is essential to be mindful of the potential risks of the disease from bird droppings,” Tovar says.

What is the risk for ‘parrot fever’ in humans?
Dembek and colleagues released an article in the journal Pathogens in 2023 that states that humans typically contract psittacosis after coming into contact with dried bird droppings or secretions. If people are exposed to the dried secretions, they may inhale dust that is contaminated with bacteria.
“Humans most commonly become exposed through the cleaning of dried bird feces in bird cages [or] exposure to airborne bird feces in bird parks,” says McHugh. “Care should be taken when cleaning bird cages, or when near bird droppings.”
Psittacosis can affect any person, depending only on how frequently they are exposed. “These include poultry farm workers, veterinarians, bird owners, and those who work in pet stores,” explains Dembek.
The CDC states that there is no evidence to suggest that cooking or eating cooked poultry can spread the illness.
The animal welfare scientist at Four Paws International, Thaina Landim De Barros, warns that those who reside in or have planned travel to any of the European nations where there have been more cases reported need not alter their plans. “It’s not something people should start to get anxious about,” she stated. “It’s not a disease that’s causing a pandemic.”
However, she continues, funding for studies looking into the spread of psittacosis should be provided. “I would highlight the importance of focusing on prevention [and] addressing the root causes of zoonotic diseases and the interlink between the human-animal-environment interface.”
