Surgery to reduce weight is beneficial for kidney transplant recipients who are obese.
New York- Weight loss surgery is also beneficial for kidney transplant in obese individuals according to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
Obesity is one of the significant reasons some patients are denied transplantation.
However, researchers have stated that weight loss surgery not only helps reduce patients weight making them eligible for transplantation safely, but it also addresses other health issues.
The study analysed 183 patients in the final stages of kidney disease from January 2019 to June 2023 out of which 36 individuals underwent weight loss surgery followed by kidney transplantation for 10 patients.
It is noteworthy that patients who underwent both surgeries experienced a 27% reduction in their weight at the time of transplantation. Moreover, they also achieved better control over their high blood pressure and diabetes.
