Travel and tourism are driven by women: The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) highlights the critical role that women play in the worldwide travel and tourism industry in honor of International Women’s Day. WTTC data indicates that women make up about 40% of all jobs in the tourist industry, which is a sizable component of the workforce.
This represents a significant rise from 2010 to 2019 and shows that the number of women employed directly in the industry increased by 24%, from 38.6 million to 47.8 million.
Important data show that, among the Travel & Tourism industry, the hospitality sector stands out as the top employer of women, accounting for over half (52 percent) of total female employment in 2019.
“Women are essential to the travel and tourism industry. WTTC President & CEO Julia Simpson emphasized the beneficial effects of women in the industry, saying, “We are proud that our sector is one of the largest employers of women in the world.”

Women have a vital role to play in our industry’s continued growth, and we have the chance to improve the resilience and inclusivity of travel and tourism. A healthy future for the travel and tourism industry will depend on placing women at its center.
According to data from the global body, women work in travel and tourism at a rate higher than the norm for workers in other industries worldwide. Compared to the workforce as a whole, women hold a higher percentage of jobs in the industry in places like the Americas.
“On this International Women’s Day, the WTTC said that this data highlights the noteworthy role that women play in the travel and tourism industry, illustrating its role as a driving force behind gender equality and female emancipation worldwide.”
WTTC is still dedicated to giving women equitable access to high-paying professions, supporting SMEs in their entrepreneurial endeavors, and creating more high-level possibilities for them inside of major organizations.
How Travel is Relateable?
When travel inspires us to accept variety and appreciate our differences as well as our commonalities, it’s one of the best things about the world. “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness,” as Mark Twain once said.
However, there is still more work to be done in the tourism business in terms of gender equality and diversity. For example, statistics for leadership and C-suite positions do not reflect the fact that women make up the majority of hotel employees. That being said, there are still plenty of trailblazers to be discovered. In honor of International Women’s Day in 2024, we spoke with four powerful women in the tourism sector about their passion for the profession and the the trip that impacted them the most.
