Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman: Anne has been married to Adam Shulman for more than a decade. Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman have a love straight out of the movies. The actress knew from the second she met the producer that he was the love of her life.
Over a decade later, Anne and Adam celebrated their wedding anniversary, cuddled up on the couch with the soundscape of a rainy New York evening. “I was curled up on his chest, and we were watching hour three of Abbott Elementary, and I was like, ‘I’m so happy. This is the right guy for me.'” she said on Late Night with Seth Meyers in October 2023.
The pair have kept their relationship relatively low-key, but that hasn’t stopped them from gushing over one another. “We’re really just lucky that we keep growing together,” Anne gushed on the Drew Barrymore Show.
Here’s a complete breakdown of Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman’s relationship timeline:
The two didn’t date right away.
Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman: Anne and Adam met through mutual friends and sparked an instant connection. “We hit it off immediately, but it took us a pretty long time to get together,” she told Vogue in 2010. “He thought that I had a boyfriend, and I thought that he had a girlfriend, so I thought that I’d better keep my distance because I didn’t want to be that girl.“Upon realizing they were both single, the Idea of Youstarlet said, “things sped up a bit — and I think I’ll leave it at that.”
Anne later told Harper’s Bazaar U.K. (via People) that it was love at first sight. “I knew from the second I met him that he was the love of my life,” the actress said. “I also knew that I couldn’t have met him at a worse time. I took my trust out for a ridiculous joyride with him.”
She added: “It was scary. But as the days wore on, it kept getting better and better. I found that the love I found for him made me more trusting of everyone, and the more I started to see who I had become.”
They were spotted for the first time together in 2009.
Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman: Anne later revealed on Seth Meyers that she and Adam officially got “closer” after her hosting debut on Saturday Night Live in October 2008. And in April 2009, the pair were first photographed together at an industry event. From then, the two were frequently snapped front row at fashion weeks and at film premieres (though, they walked the red carpets separately). They finally debuted their couple status when appearing side by side at the A Streetcar Named Desire play premiere in December 2009.
Anne and Adam got engaged two years later.
While typically keeping their relationship private, Anne told People at the time: “I am very much in love with him. [Only], Adam totally ruined my plan. I was really actually looking forward to a little alone time, and then I fell in love like a fool!”
What’s more, Adam worked with diamond jewelry company Kwiat Heritage to design his fiancée’s ring, per The Hollywood Reporter. He co-owns a jewelry company, James Banks Design, with jewelry and prop designer Heidi Nahser Fink, whom he met on Anne’s Alice in Wonderland.
Anne and Adam married in 2012.
The two wed in a private coastal ceremony in Big Sur, California, in September 2012 among about 150 guests. According to British Vogue, she wore a strapless gown designed by Valentino Garavani, while the groom sported a classic black tuxedo.
Shortly after tying the knot, Anne gushed about her husband to Glamour (via Us Weekly). “He’s a good man,” she said. “He’s beyond intelligent. He loves fearlessly. His beliefs are beautiful. He’s my best friend. I love him. I just feel that I have the greatest husband in the world for me.”
Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman: She was smitten for him even years later. On set for her Oscar-winning role in Les Miserables, she had Adam leave the room to get through emotional scenes.
“He walks into a room, and I light up. I can’t help it,” she opened up to Harper’s Bazaar U.K. in 2013. “A few days into [filming], I said, ‘I’m having too much fun, I just want to play with you and I need to be really sad right now.'”
Adam changed Anne’s outlook on relationships.
Moving past the honeymoon phase, Anne opened up to Savannah Guthrie on TODAY about how marriage changed their relationship.
“I didn’t think it was going to, and we both talked about it beforehand and how it wasn’t going to change anything, but something shifts, and I don’t know what it is,” she said during the 2015 interview. “I think I didn’t realize I was keeping a part of myself protected, and it’s kind of all on the line now. I’m his and he’s mine.”
Adam also shared a message for Anne that Savannah read on the show: “He said, ‘The biggest surprise about being married is that he continues to fall deeper and deeper in love with you.'”
Before she met Adam, Anne was in a highly publicized relationship with Italian property developer Raffaello Folliero. It ended in the summer of 2008, shortly before he pleaded guilty to 14 counts of money laundering, conspiracy and wire fraud.
Following all the public scrutiny, The Devil Wears Prada star told Vogue she hated talking about the breakup because she didn’t want it to define her. She simply said it caused “a lot of lingering trust issues.”
That is, until Adam came along. She told Elle: “He changed my ability to be in the world comfortably. I think the accepted narrative now is that we, as women, don’t need anybody. But I need my husband. His unique and specific love has changed me.”
Anne and Adam have two children together.
Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman: The couple welcomed their sons, Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman in 2016 and Jack Shulman in 2019, respectively. “She always amazes me,” the jewelry designer told People in 2020. “As a mother, she is gorgeous. Every aspect of [parenthood] is amazing. Every day makes me appreciate it more.”
It hasn’t been the easiest road, though. In her recent cover story with Vanity Fair, Anne got vulnerable and revealed that she had a miscarriage in 2015 — before giving birth to sons Jonathan and Jack.
They’ve worked together in Hollywood
Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman: Anne and Adam’s relationship has crossed over into projects, too. When the actress starred in the indie drama Song One in 2014, her husband joined as a co-producer.
“People always say don’t work with your spouse,” she told PEOPLE, initially hesitant about mixing work with pleasure. “But I loved working with him. He’s really good at this, and he’s a wonderful producer. And I feel like I actually learned a lot from him in the process.”
The pair got matching tattoos
Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman: Anne and Adam inked a declaration of their love for one another. During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Anne revealed that she and her husband got matching “M” tattoos.
“The idea is that, individually, we’re whole, but together we’re more,” the Princess Diaries star explained. “I don’t expect him to complete me, and he doesn’t expect me to complete him. I’m my own person. He’s his own person, and we choose to be together because we believe we make each other better.”
