Gudi Padwa 2024 : Before we actually get into the answer to this question, Understanding the root word helps. The Hindu calendar is quite different from the English calendar. The first month of the Hindu calendar is Chaitra and the first phase of the month is called Prathipada. Padwa is a Marathi variant of the Sanskrit word pāḍḍavā/pāḍḍavo which is the first day of the prathipada.
Similarly, the first day of the month is called padyami in Telugu which has the same root as that of padwa.
Coming back to the question, I presume we know that the ritual of gudi padwa was started by the great king Chhatrapati Shivaji to welcome the new year by raising the gudi, as it signifies victory,
The significance is the same in south India as well, we celebrate the arrival of a new year. However, the rituals differ as they are influenced by the culture of the place.
We Telugus call it Ugadi, My brothers Kannadigas called it the Yugadi which essentially signifies the beginning of a new year (yug+adi=the beginning of an era)
The Kashmiri pundits celebrate it as the Navreh, the Rajasthanis call it Thapna.
We are divided by cultures but united by the cause.
