And more than anyone else, a select few names win the Oscar. Several actors, directors, and other members of the film industry have won more Oscars than any other victors after nearly a century of Academy Awards ceremonies. The 96th event will take place on Sunday, March 10, 2024.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences reports that since 1929, more than 3,000 Oscars have been given out. The following people have received the most Oscar nominations and wins:
Who has ever won the most Oscars?
Walt Disney is the person who has won the most Oscars ever, which may surprise you since he is not a movie star. Twenty-two of the 26 Oscars he won were competitive, and the remaining four were honorary.
In 1933, Walt received one of his special awards—this time for creating Mickey Mouse. His 1937 “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” statuettes included one full-size and seven “dwarf” statuettes, earning him an honorary Academy Award.
His final victory for “Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day” was given to him posthumously in 1969. Disney made the animated short before he died in 1966.
Disney is followed by the well-known camera optical systems developer Iain Neil, who has won 13 Oscars; production designer and art director Cedric Gibbons, who has won 11; and photographer Farciot Edouart, who has won 10 awards.
Which performer has won the most Oscars in history?
The actress with the most Oscars is Katherine Hepburn, who has won four of them. She received twelve nominations before winning “Morning Glory” in 1933, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” in 1967, “The Lion in Winter” in 1968, and “On Golden Pond” in 1981.
The actors with the most Academy Award victories are tied at three, Walter Brennan, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Jack Nicholson. Three actresses, Ingrid Bergman, Frances McDormand, and Meryl Streep, have each won three Oscars.

The only person to win three Oscars for Best Actor is Daniel Day-Lewis. He won for the first time with “My Left Foot” in 1989. Day-Lewis was the winner once again for “There Will Be Blood” in 2008 and “Lincoln” in 2013.
Among Nicholson’s three honors are two Best Actor and one Best Supporting Actor Oscars. For the films “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975) and “As Good as It Gets” (1997), he won best actor. For the film “Terms of Endearment” (1983), he won best supporting.
Brennan won three Oscars in the category of best supporting actor, for the 1936 film “Come and Get It,” which was followed by the 1938 film “Kentucky” and the 1940 film “The Westerner.”
Bergman received two wins for Best Actress and one for Best Supporting Actress. Her two best actress wins came from “Gaslight” in 1944 and “Anastasia” in 1956. In 1974, Bergman took home the Best Supporting Actress award for “Murder on the Orient Express.”
In 1979, Streep won her first Oscar for her supporting performance in “Kramer vs. Kramer.” For the 1982 film Sophie’s Choice, she took home her first Best Actress prize. In 2012, Streep won the second best actress award for “The Iron Lady.”
Jodie Foster, nominated this year for “Nyad,” and Robert De Niro, nominated for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” may soon become two of the few actors with at least three Oscar victories. De Niro and Foster have already won two Oscars apiece.
